MINISTER of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee Wednesday handed over the $20.8M water cannon
to the Police Force to be used to restore public order should the occasion arise.
The cannon was handed over on the Tactical Services Unit drill square at Eve Leary.
Rohee said that the vehicle arrived was acquired two weeks ago.
Rohee said, “The procurement of this vehicle is not political, because a modern police force needs such a vehicle and its arrival is not aimed at intimidation of the public, but just to maintain public order.”
He explained, when questioned by the media, that its arrival here in Guyana with elections less than two weeks away is coincidental, as there was no arrangement with the shippers to have it here at this time.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene, in his remarks, recalled that five years ago on Regent Street, Georgetown, the police used a Fire Service tender to disperse a massive crowd, and a water cannon would have done a better job.
The water cannon is made to use foam, tear gas or water to disperse large crowds in the event of a riot.
