Broken tree branch kills miner in gold pit

A 24-year-old miner from the Amerindian community of Capoey on the Essequibo Coast died on Sunday afternoon after a huge tree limb broke and fell upon him while he was working a pit for gold in the North West District. Reports from Matthews Ridge said 24-year-old David Allicock was working with other miners when an excavator at the worksite is suspected to have broken the tree limb that fell and struck him.
According to reports, the unconscious miner was quickly rushed to the Pakera Hospital at Matthews Ridge, several miles away, but died on the way. The left side of his head sustained grievous injuries.
David Allicock is survived by his devastated parents, David and Wendy, and sister Ester and other relatives. He is expected to be buried at Capoey.
Police are investigating the incident.
