…as presidential debate draws near
As the presidential debate set for tomorrow at the George Walcott Lecture Theatre of the University of Guyana draws near, there is reportedly a disturbing new trend on campus, which has caused grave concern at the level of the administration. Yesterday, APNU posters mushroomed on campus, coupled with the defacing and spray-painting of walls and roadways leading to the campus.
In an invited comment, Pro-Chancellor Dr. Prem Misir expressed concern over this ‘untoward’ development, and noted that while casting a shadow on the debate, it is also not in keeping with the convention and practice of the university campus and should not be condoned.
He noted that while a university can have political fora, such as the debate involving the three Presidential Candidates representing the three main political parties in this month’s general election, the dissemination of individual party messages, sloganeering and setting up of posters and other political material is ultra vires.
The Pro-Chancellor observed that the University, for the first time, has proposed the development of presidential debates which augurs well for all, and for the forum to be greeted with such activities is most disturbing.
He is calling for an investigation to be conducted with a view to identifying the culpable persons.
Meanwhile, the debate is on and is expected to begin at 15:00hrs tomorrow.
