Badree, Narine help T&T bounce back with big win
FOLLOWING their defeat against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) in their first match of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Super50 competition, Trinidad and Tobago bounced back with a dominant win over defending champions Leeward Islands with fantastic bowling performances by Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday.
Sunil Narine with his off-spinners claimed an amazing 6 – 48 from 11.3 overs while his teammate, Badree, recorded 4 – 34 from 12 overs.
The match was dominated in every area and won in fine style as the team from the twin islands secured four points for the win along with four super bonus points, ending the match before the lunch interval.
Leeward Islands on the other hand have now embarrassingly plummeted to their second consecutive defeat, of being bowled out for under 100 runs, which leaves them at -4 on the points table.
With sunshine in full bloom, the match got underway on time; T&T won the toss gave the opposition the chance to bat. Leeward Islands were restricted to just 94 in 25.2 overs then T&T reached the target in 14.2 overs for the win losing five wickets in the process.
Leewards were 26 – 0 after five overs but found things happening very quickly in the middle as six wickets fell in the next ten overs, they were 41 – 6. Badree claimed the wickets of Montcin Hodge (6), Javia Liburd (1), Steve Liburd (0) and Jahmar Hamilton (1).
Narine’s first two victims were Austin Richards (14) and Orlando Peters (0) then he ripped through the remainder of the batting line up as he claimed his other four victims; Chesney Hughes (25), Justin Athanaze (9), Jason Campbell (0) and Anthony Martin (9) while Lionel Baker was unbeaten on 16.
Leeward Island’s batting downfall was based on poor shot selection and irresponsible batting roles.
In Trinidad’s reply, William Perkins and Justin Guillen took the score up to 28 before the former was removed for 22 by Martin which brought Dwayne Bravo to the middle. Guillen (6) followed six runs later when he drove one in the air to square cover, T&T was 34 – 2.
Bravo and the big hitting Keiron Pollard took the score past 50 in the ninth over before Bravo slashed one in the air to backward point off Martin which left T&T at 51 – 3 as Jason Mohammed joined Pollard in the middle.
His intent along with Pollard’s was to raise the run rate above 6-per-over but in doing so Mohammed lost his wicket to Martin, T&T were 69-4. Kevin Cooper (1) also lost his wicket to Martin and this brought together the pair of Darren Ganga and Pollard who immediately took the attack to the Leewards bowlers to see T&T home.
