M&CC’s garbage collection ‘back on schedule’

THE Mayor and City Council yesterday advised that its garbage collection is back on schedule. Therefore, citizens can expect their refuse to be collected on time, the M&CC assured in a statement.

Last week, there was a delay in the provision of the service in a few areas, including East Ruimveldt, North Ruimveldt and South Ruimveldt. This was due to certain mechanical problems with the trucks of one of the council’s contractors. However, over the weekend, the problems were rectified and the situation was brought under control.

Also, the M&CC said its in-house collection team working in Group 8 is back on the job. Therefore, council is collecting garbage from those areas within Group 8, including:  Queenstown, Alberttown, South Cummingsburg, North Cummingsburg, Kingston, Woolford Avenue, Carifesta Avenue and Thomas Land Road.

However, the council said it is very troubled with the increasing number of garbage heaps in certain sections of the City.
“Some people appear to want to continue with the old habit of illegal dumping on parapets and other thoroughfares,” stated M&CC’s Public Relations Officer Mr. Royston King.

“Over the last few days, the constabulary arrested thirty nine litterbugs in the city. They have been charged and placed before the courts,” King stated. He noted that the maximum fine for littering is $10,000. According to reports from the constabulary, some businessmen have been contributing to this untidy state of affairs. “It is not good because it does not help the image of the City,” King said. “Georgetown can do better,” he added.

As a result, the constabulary is stepping up its operations in this area of council’s responsibility in all parts of the city.

King is appealing to all citizens to avoid illegal dumping of garbage on parapets, pavements and in canals. “Residents of local communities should wait for our collection trucks; they will arrive,” he assured.
