Baramita miner dead, suspected assailant hospitalised

POLICE are investigating the murder of miner Johanna Baird, 22, of Baramita, North West District (NWD), which occurred at about 01:00 hr yesterday morning.

Investigations revealed that Baird and a fifteen-year-old youth were imbibing at a shop in Baramita when an argument allegedly developed between them. Baird allegedly slapped the youth, who retaliated by stabbing him to his neck.

The youth left and returned with a cutlass, but a confrontation with another man in the shop caused the youth to be wounded to his chest and abdomen.
The Police said Johanna Baird was pronounced dead on arrival at the Matthews Ridge Hospital, NWD, while the youth has been admitted at that institution as a patient under guard.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified man who was taken to the Mahdia Hospital at about 00:15 hr on Sunday, October 16, 2011, with a wound to his head.
The victim was taken to the hospital by two men and a woman, and succumbed while receiving medical treatment.
The three persons have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with investigations into the man’s death.
