Butts and De Souza lead GNIC past DCC
STRONG batting performances from former West Indian player Clyde Butts and team mate Shawn De Souza led Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) to a thrilling four-wicket victory over Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in the Carib Beer first-division two-day match at the DCC Ground on Sunday.
On day one DCC reached 235 all out and then restricted the opposition to 55 – 5 at stumps in a commanding position for first innings points.
Day two then saw GNIC being bowled out for 125 in 33 overs with reputable left-arm wrist-spinner Totaram Bishun bagging 7 – 47 from 12 overs.
With a lead of 110 runs, DCC piled on 187 losing six wickets in the process Demerara Under-19 batsman Jahron Byron top scored with 70 while receiving as support for Trevon Griffith (32) and Omesh Dhaniram (30*). Rawle Merrell (2-45) and Keno Alphonso (2-31) had the best bowling figures for the GNIC side.
However, a 167-run fifth wicket-partnership between West Indies Chief Selector Butts and De Souza took GNIC to the 298 target with a minimum of 41 overs left in the day.
Butts (85), De Souza (79) and Ovid Richardson (47) were the chief scorers that saw GNIC to victory.
Bishun followed his first innings bowling performance of 7 – 47 with 3-89 to complete his 10-wicket haul while Dexter George supported with 2 – 52.
