THIRTY-SEVEN children of officers, other ranks and civilian employees of the Guyana Defence Force who successfully completed the National Grade Six Examination and gained places at secondary schools were presented with bursaries at the Force’s 2011 Bursary awards ceremony at Base Camp Ayanganna last Friday. Each award is valued $25,000 per year, and will be offered over a period of five years, providing the students remain in school.
Heading the award recipients was Ms. Brassette Henry who gained 530 marks at the examination. Second and third place awardees were Ms. Aneesa Hussain and Master Kurk Rogers with 524 and 521 marks respectively.
The three were each awarded places at Queens College, while their peers gained places at other secondary schools across the country.
The GDF continues to present bursaries not only as recognition of the efforts of the students themselves but also in recognition of the interest, encouragement and sacrifices made by their parents and guardians towards ensuring that they get secondary education.
In brief remarks at the award ceremony, Captain (CG) John Flores congratulated the awardees and their parents for the hard work and dedication that resulted in success.
He also reminded the awardees that they had entered another phase in building their foundation for future success. “As you move forward, be careful to make wise choices. Choose to work hard and set goals that can be achieved,” he said.
“Remember however that, while secondary education demands much of your attention and dedication, you must have fun and enjoy your time at school. Your successes will be more worth the while if you have a ‘rounded’ experience,” he added.
Additionally, Captain Flores urged the parents to remain vigilant and continue providing much love and support to their children every step of the way.
The students and parents expressed thanks to the Chief-of-Staff and all officers and ranks of the force for celebrating with them and extending such meaningful support through the bursaries.
The force extends congratulations to all of its bursary recipients and wishes them much success in the future.
