FOLLOWING the just concluded Guyana Cricket Board/El Dorado four team limited overs tournament, the senior selection panel of the GCB selected 29 players for a one day fitness test and training which is slated for the Georgetown Cricket Club ground from 09:30hrs. Dependable West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul will not be available for the West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional limited overs tournament dubbed Super50 of which Guyana would be facing the Windward Islands in their first fixture, due to international commitments.
However, inspirational captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, T20 all rounder Christopher Barnwell along with West Indies T20 wicketkeeper batsman Derwin Christian and discarded openers Sewnarine Chattergoon and Travis Dowlin with middle order batsman Narsingh Deonarine are listed.
Eight new faces, in fast bowlers Kellon Carmichael and Clinton Pestano who were part of Guyana’s spearhead in the WICB Under-19 tournament, Rajiv Ivan, Norman Fredericks, Steven Latcha, Eugene La Fleur, Chandrapaul Hemraj and Raj Nannan, are in the squad.
While some may be surprised at the selection of Ivan who was not asked to bowl much during the four team tournament which Cellink Berbice led by West Indies ‘A’ team batsman Assad Fudadin won, his returns for his club Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets for the past three weeks were impressive.
According to information coming from the club, Ivan scored 123 runs from three innings in both the Berbice Cricket Board’s TELENEC and Ramcharitar Construction sponsored first division competitions, with a highest score of 70 against Edinburgh, while he took a combined total of 9 wickets for 69 runs with his best being 3 for 7 against Bermine.
Following the completion of the fitness test and training, the 14 man squad would be selected along with six standby players for an encampment and despite Chanderpaul’s unavailability for the Super50, he will be participating in the encampment period in an effort to assist our batsmen to be better prepared.
All out of town players are reminded that if selected you will immediately commence encampment at Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence, LBI.
