GUYANA is a country of many religions and this nation has always enjoyed an atmosphere of religious tolerance and brotherhood. In fact, under the PPP/C administration, this positive aspect of nation-building has always been emphasized and can even be used as a model for other nations to emulate. This brings me to the purpose of writing this letter. In the Sunday, September 25 edition of the Stabroek News, under the caption: “The World beyond Georgetown – Enmore” we see a sinister agenda being played out, one that could threaten the very fabric of the unity enjoyed in this country.
The Stabroek News’s piece provided an analysis of the village of Enmore from a historical perspective leading up to present day. Within the analysis, mention was made of the Hindu and Christian faiths and the religious tolerance that is practised by the followers of these two great religions in the village of Enmore.
Interestingly, nothing was mentioned about the religion of Islam in that village, when Enmore can boast about having the highest concentration of Muslims in a single village in Guyana and I dare say has the second largest following in the village. This village is also home to two Mosques and an Islamic Academy and I find it preposterous and mischievous that the Stabroek News found it rather convenient to ignore the positive role Islam has played in the village of Enmore as the other two faiths mentioned have.
Credit must be given where it is due and the Guyana Chronicle and the Guyana Times have on every occasion paid heed to this country’s religious diversity and have given all these faiths an equal share of publicity in their pages. However, it seems Stabroek News has been developing a pattern to subtly downplay that Guyana comprises Muslims who have had a positive impact on national development and this could possibly be attributed to having an anti-Muslim position.
This is of course taken directly from the pages of the AFC’s handbook which has time and again aligned itself with those that are hostile to Muslims.
I call on all Muslims to take umbrage with the Stabroek News for this absurdity and nothing less than an apology should be forthcoming from that media outfit. Such actions – and I dare say that it seems to be a deliberate pattern being developed – only sow the seeds of disunity in this beloved land of ours. Guyanese have conquered those who sought to divide this nation and we will fight against those who seek to continue this evil.
Why Stabroek News made no mention of Islam in Enmore?
