In observance of World Heart Day…

US Embassy in Georgetown to hold awareness march
WORLD Heart Day will be observed on Thursday, September 29, under the theme, ‘One World, One Home, One Heart’. In recognition thereof, the United States Embassy in Guyana will join the global observances by spear-heading a brisk walk through the National Park in Georgetown.
The walk, which gets going at 06:00 hrs, will move off from Carifesta Avenue, and will be led by United States Ambassador, Brent Hardt and the U.S. Embassy community in Guyana. Participants will walk two laps around the track, and are asked to wear red tops.
A release from the US Embassy said the march is aimed at promoting healthy exercising habits, while raising awareness of the risks and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, killing 17.1 million people every year. Eighty-two percent of these deaths occur in the developing world.
CVDs have a significant economic impact, as well as a direct impact on patients, families and local communities. Risk factors include raised blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, smoking, inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables, obesity and physical inactivity.
Thirty minutes or more of physical activity at least 5 days per week cuts the risk of developing CVDs, diabetes, stroke, and cancer. Going for a walk, taking the stairs, stretching, or bike riding are great ways to increase physical activity, the release advised.
The World Heart Federation created World Heart Day in 2000 to raise global awareness of the impact of heart disease and stroke. In partnership with WHO, the World Heart Federation organizes events in more than 100 countries — including health checks, organized walks, runs and fitness sessions, public talks, stage shows, scientific forums, exhibitions, concerts, carnivals, and sports tournaments.
