Guyana has really come a far way

ONE must always make an issue out of anything within the agricultural sector. In Guyana, a lot of work is being put into this area of development. This is wise too, as the better and more productive this sector is, the better it is for all Guyana. So reading about Minister Robert Persaud’s handing over of a 34 million bulldozer, to Region 6 Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha, was really most encouraging.
The bulldozer will be used to shore up dam access and maintenance, which are critical concerns of  rice farmers in the region. Minister Persaud told the farmers present at the handing-over ceremony, that the ministry has so far been successful in addressing issues of drainage and irrigation, and other matters in the region. With such equipment, a first after many years, the
region’s production is bound to increase, and farmers’ minds will be at ease.
If all goes well, and these kinds of investments continue from government, it is expected that for the first time in history, the country is expected to hit 400,000 tonnes in rice production.
So one can see that Guyana has really come a far way. During the pre-1992 days, there was a slogan that was chanted, but it stopped right there. The slogan was the FCH-Feed, Clothe, and House the nation. This never materialized.  Now, even if one is to think of food alone, Guyana has really advanced exceptionally well.
