TREMENDOUS excitement has overtaken the residents of the lower Pomeroon
River in Region 2, where there is a flow of natural gas in the Friendship canal area, where there is a primary school, a health centre and community play ground.
Artisan well operators have discovered this new phenomenon. The GGMC officials were alerted and an experimental laboratory was developed to capture and mitigate the flow of this gas. Having installed a storage tank and a cooling system more than three households were connected and are now operating their gas stoves with gas consistent with methane gas. However, the experimental process is in progress and most likely when all necessary safeguards have been developed then the extension to other buildings may be authorised.
One resident is of the opinion that his generator can perform with the gas when a suitable carburator is modified to use methane gas.
Friendship canal is a vast agricultural area located parallel to the sea coast about eight miles on the right bank of the lower Pomeroon River.
