Aunt fined, niece on bail after abusive exchange

MOHINI Singh (no address given) was fined a total of $30,000, by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday, for abusing and assaulting her niece, Chandraleka Balram.
The defendant pleaded guilty to having, on August 13, made use of abusive language towards Balram, causing a breach of the peace and unlawfully assaulted her.
Balram, who was also charged with using abusive language towards her aunt, pleaded not guilty and was put on $10,000 bail until November 10.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said Balram had accompanied a policeman who went to Singh’s house to arrest her husband.
But when Balram and the officer arrived there, Singh became annoyed, chucked her niece and abused her, resulting in an exchange between the two women, the prosecutor said.
