ON the CNN programme ‘Situation Room’ hosted by Wolf Blitzer on August 9, 2011, in response to a question about the recent riots in England, Jack Cafferty, a regular contributor, condemned the protestors in very strong language. He described London as one of the finest cities in the world and “not any rag-tag Third World outback where this sort of thing was to be expected.”
In other words, it is commonplace in countries like Egypt, Libya, Syria, etc, and therefore the ‘Arab Spring’ demonstrations recently can be justified.
This comment is nauseatingly familiar to those of us who were caught up in driving the imperialist and colonialists out of our country. It clearly demonstrates the pervasive mindset of the privileged journalists and others who continue to broadcast and hold elitist opinions under the guise of news reporting and democratic governance.
We in this part of the world must firmly condemn this kind of bombast and its consequential innuendoes, never losing sight of the underclass to which these foreigners relegate us.
The British Prime Minister added insult to injury by asserting that reliance on phony human rights defences will not prevent the authorities from dealing with “this criminality”. Guyanese should be wary about the persons who they invite to this country, whatever the reason or purpose.
