THE New York-based humanitarian group, ‘Buxtonians 4 Life’ and a prominent Buxton couple residing in Atlanta, Georgia, thrilled the hearts of young and old in the East Coast Demerara community, on Tuesday, by making donations of much needed gifts. In a heart warming show of generosity towards their brothers and sisters still living in Guyana, the visitors handed over the items during a simple presentation ceremony at the Buxton Health Centre.
The beneficiaries were the Health Centre itself, vision impaired senior citizens and six Buxton Primary School pupils who recorded top performances at the National Grade Six Assessment examination.
The first presentations were made by Mr. Charles Liverpool, formerly of Company Path, Buxton and his wife, medical doctor Joan Liverpool to the six schoolchildren, who each received a scientific electronic calculator and a stipend to assist with their transportation costs in the new school year.
The recipients from Mr. Liverpoool were Avery Phill (516 marks and placed at Bishop’s High School); Yuon Armstrong (491 marks and placed at President’s College) and Roshaun Graham, Kenduce Cooper, Messiah Mussenden and Althea Charles (481, 478, 471 and 457 respectively, all placed at Annandale Secondary School).
The eye care presentations were from Dr. Liverpool, who handed over several dozen reading glasses, as well as special sunglasses for persons who had surgeries for cataract or glaucoma. She emphasised the importance of protecting the eyes from the rays of the intense sunshine, currently being experienced as global warming continues to take its toll.
In brief remarks, Dr. Liverpool congratulated the students and encouraged them to continue their hard work and aim for better. She also congratulated Headmistress, Ms. Marilyn Wills for a good job done and the children’s parents, for their support. She urged the parents not to see the results as an end but merely a transitioning in a journey that is very long and requires the same zeal and fervour.
It is time to move away from the thinking that it is merely the name of the school, the headteacher or a particular class teacher that influences good performance at examinations, she emphasised, challenging the wider community to be supportive and see themselves as having an important role to play in moulding of the children.
“Please let us go back to the old practice of a village or community raising a child,” she implored.
Mr. Liverpool, who grew up in Company Path, Buxton, was educated in that village before migrating to the U.S. almost 40 years ago. The couple is currently home on vacation and undertook the gesture as a way of giving something back to their village.
Meanwhile, the third donation, made by ‘Buxtonians 4 Life’, comprised a quantity of bed linen for use in the rooms where patients are examined at the Buxton Health Centre and were presented by the Chairperson of the Guyana Chapter, Ms. Shenele Grandison, to Nursing Assistant Faye Hunte.
Headmistress Wills and Nurse Hunte thanked the donors for the gifts received with much joy and appreciation and gave the assurance that the people of Buxton would take good care of them to derive maximum benefit.
