Amerindians do not see themselves as ‘tools,’ ‘subjects’ of current government

I am forced to ask Mr. Patrick Fitzpatrick, on whose behalf he is speaking? He makes the claim in his Kaieteur News’ letter that the National Toshaos Council is emerging to be one that is committed to carrying out the policies of the government even if it (he means the policies) adversely affects Amerindians.  Well I have some pertinent and debunking comments to offer. First, did any administration of the past (particularly the PNC) show any consideration for the Amerindian people of this country? These sessions have been going on for five years now, and it is only now that potential gainsayers are seeking to politicise these conferences. Where were these carpers and cavilers all these years? I urge Mr. Fitzpatrick to ask for the opinion of these Toshaos, as regards persons speaking on their behalf. The Toshaos resent this. They can speak eloquently for themselves. They do not see themselves as ‘tools’ and ‘subjects.’
Currently, the government is assiduously making every effort to ensure that the Amerindian peoples be consulted and enlightened about proposed projects for their communities. So it is not a ‘hand me down’ system and governance. The ambience is fraternal and mutual. In these meetings, the Amerindian leaders throve in the reciprocity afforded them. Thus it was really the involvement of the people themselves in this process.
So you can wonder (as long as you have time to waste Mr. Fitzpatrick) regarding “… how long it would … (take the) Amerindian leaders to realize that the head of the National Toshaos Council was politically motivated and does not represent the cause of fellow Amerindians.” That may become your lifelong  ambition.   Most Amerindians do understand the mandate of the Council. They also understand and appreciate what is happening and who are benefiting. Do you expect them to go against their own good? Do you think these people are stupid? They resent your kind of sophistry.
I close by reminding you (you seem totally at lost Mr. Fitzpatrick) that irrespective of Norway and the World Bank (as President Jagdeo explained) that hinterland development will go on. That is a commitment the PPP has made and one it hasn’t reneged on.
