Government undertakes restoration works on historic 1763 monument

CULTURE Minister Dr Frank Anthony has disclosed that works are underway for the restoration of the historic 1763 Monument. Speaking during a recent press conference, the Minister pointed out that since the establishment of the landmark, the monument has lost its true physical identity.

“When this monument was first built, it had a fountain. Now, we can barely recognize this. Landscaping and lights will be looked at too,” Dr Anthony said.

The minister said that a police outpost and a sanitary facility will also be constructed within the vicinity of the historic monument, which would allow for proper preservation of the site.

Further, he noted that plans are in the pipeline for the commencement of construction works on the East Coast of Demerara to have the 1823 Monument constructed.

The 1823 Monument will signify heroic persons who rose up against their colonializers during the said year on the East Coast of Demerara.

Artist Philip Moore won an open competition to create a monument in honour of the 1763 rebellion at Plantation Magdalenenburg in Berbice, and the 1763 Monument was sculpted and unveiled on May 23, 1976.

The monument rests on a plinth designed by local architect Albert Rodrigues, and is adorned with 5 bronze plaques that represent “Seeking Inspiration”, “Uniting the people”, “Destroying the enemies”, “Control”, and “ Praise and Thanksgiving”.

Monuments, created to honour heroes and commemorate or celebrate historic events, depict the national pride of our country. Their creation can be regarded as works of art and/or architecture that promote national consciousness and beauty in our towns, villages and city.
