GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (CMC) – A late morning deluge destroyed condemned Barbados and Leeward Islands to settle for a no-decision in the WICB Regional Under-19 Championship yesterday. Rain stopped play five minutes before lunch with Leewards on 39 for two, after they chose to bat on the final day of the second round match at the Demerara Cricket Club.
But the outfield, sodden following two days of rain, failed to adequately handle the additional water, and the players never returned following the interval, with the official decision to cease coming at the time for the regularly scheduled tea break.
Both sides walk away from the contest with three points, with Barbados remaining in a three-way tie at the top of the ladder with Jamaica and hosts Guyana on 15 points, and Leewards fifth on three.
The Barbadians face Jamaica at Eve Leary in the third round, which opens tomorrow, when the Leewards meet Windward Islands at Bourda Oval.
When play started an hour later than regularly scheduled, Kyle Mayers gave Barbados early success when he trapped Elijah Peters lbw for four, playing forward to a delivery that moved back in the third over of the innings.
Shaquille Martina joined opener Duane Webbe, and was just getting into the thick of things, when off-spinner Chaim Holder had him stumped for 13, leaving Leewards 31 for two – but there was little play following his dismissal.
