-mother says he’s a bully, troublemaker
A VICIOUS fight between two brothers on Friday night at their ‘B’ Field, Sophia home has ended with one being hospitalized with several chop wounds and the other on the run.
Hospitalised is Simon Butters, 27, a butcher by profession. He is listed as critical by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
One Laured Benn told the Chronicle he saw when Simon returned home from work Friday night, which was around 19:40hrs, and that within a few minutes, he heard a loud noise coming from inside the house.
Suspecting that a fight was in full swing because of “the tumbling noise” coming from the house, Benn said he went to see what the matter was, and as he entered the house, he saw Simon and his sibling, Christopher Wharton, 32, locked in battle on a bed.
He said Christopher had Simon pinned on the bed and was holding a cutlass to his throat. He however managed to wrest the weapon from the older of the two brothers and separate them, but the die had already been cast.
Benn said there was blood everywhere; even the bed on which the brothers fought was soaked with Simon’s blood. He said from what he observed, Simon seemed to have sustained several chop wounds, but the deepest was the one to his throat for blood was pouring from it profusely.
Taking off his shirt, he said he tried to staunch the flow of blood from Simon’s throat by making a tourniquet of sorts, following which he hired a bus to take him to the hospital to get medical attention.
By this time, he said, the assailant had exited the house and made good his escape.
The boys’ mother, Pamela Broomes, 56, told the Chronicle that she was at church when the incident occurred, and only learnt about it when she returned home at around 22:00hrs. The moment she saw the thick blood by the front door, she said, she immediately knew that something was amiss.
Her worst fears were realized when she entered the house and saw blood everywhere, and was told that a quarrel between her two sons had escalated into a vicious fight, during which the younger one was chopped repeatedly by his brother.
Broomes said the older of the boys, who is a ‘Rasta, had only returned home a week ago and had since been very abusive towards her and his brother. Noting that he has always been a troublemaker, the mother said he usually cusses her out, much to the annoyance of Simon and other relatives, but no one has been able to do anything “because he is a bully.”
She said the boys had had their quarrels before, but she had always been at home to prevent them from fighting. She is, however, hoping that Simon would pull through, and that the police will succeed in nabbing Christopher as early as possible.
Besides the gaping wound in his throat, Simon Butters was chopped in the head and back among other places about his body.
