Digicel Caribbean Cup …

Millington hat-trick propels Guyana to 6-0 win over St Kitts & Nevis
NATIONAL striker Devon Millington scored a hat-trick in this year’s Digicel Caribbean Cup New York tournament as he helped propelled Guyana to a 6-0 win over St Kitts and Nevis when the tournament continued at the Thomas Jefferson High School Ground in Brooklyn.
Reports emanating out of USA stated that Millington who was playing in his second game for Guyana in the tournament was a thorn in the feet of the St Kitts defenders and was persistent from the open whistle and his continued pressure paid off five minutes into the contest.
The now-Alpha United striker scored his second goal with a powerful right-footer that chipped the inside of the upright that caused the St Kitts custodian to keep his ground and watch the ball sail into the back of the net.
Guyana went three goals up thanks to Millington who was really busy playing upfront. He evaded his defenders down the right side and crossed the ball to Alvor Nardin who simply had to tap it home.
National youth striker Kevin Beaton who has been in fine form in the tournament this year, gave Guyana a 4-0 lead with a one-time volley when he collected a cross ball, giving the goalie no chance to attempt a save.
Meanwhile Millington scored his third goal of the day just on the stroke of halftime to give Guyana a 5-0 lead.
Once again, national captain Howard Lowe and his troops made it very hard for the St Kitts strikers to even make an attempt on goal as they defended with their brickwall-like set-up.
Midway the second half, Deshaun Thom recorded Guyana’s sixth goal and by then the game was over for all intents and purposes.
The win, Guyana’s second in four matches, puts them with Grenada at the top of the zone with eight points. They would wrap up their preliminary round matches against Antigua and Barbuda on July 31..
After the game Guyana’s coach talked about playing with purpose and executing the game plan, while the St Kitts/Nevis team management was more concerned with the commitment from their players.
