LINDEN’S Dawn Barker put forth a remarkable performance to capture gold for Guyana in the ongoing IPF/NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championship in Miami, Florida, at the Hyatt Hotel, yesterday. The competition which is in its ninth consecutive year had Barker accumulating a total of 540kg/1188lb in the Women’s 84+ kg category to bump the United States of America (USA) champion Malinda Baum into second by a distant 75Kg.
Barker squat a maximum of 237.5kg to replace the old record of 235kg and she also bettered her Caribbean and Commonwealth record of 227.5kg. She went on to record 110kg and 192.5kg in the bench-press and dead-lift classes, respectively.
Baum finished with a total of 465kg for second after lifting 172.5kg, 117.5kg and 175kb in the squat, bench-press and dead-lift classes, in which Cheryl Abraham of Trinidad and Tobago had to settle for third with 380kg after lifting 147.5kg, 67.5kg and 165kg in the three classes.
Meanwhile, the other member of the two-person team Karel Mars is set to swing into action tomorrow.
