THE Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) sent out a three-man team to represent this country at the Pam American Qualifier, set to begin on Friday in Panama.
GABA was forced to trim the team from six to three after it encountered difficulty in raising the over two million dollars needed for the original team to participate.
Junior welterweight Bert Braithwaite and lightweight Stefan Gouveia are the boxers chosen to participate while Terrence Poole will double as manager/coach.
The team will leave Guyana this morning.
GABA president Steve Ninvalle, vice- president Eustace Cuffy and secretary Sean Richmond visited the team at the National Gymnasium yesterday.
In a short address Ninvalle urged Braithwaite and Gouveia to remain disciplined and to make Guyana proud.
He reminded the two fighters that they stand on the verge of opening doors for fellow boxers. “You are aware how difficult it has been to get this team to the Games. You coming back home with medals could make it easier the next time around,” Ninvalle said.
The president noted that July will be a hectic month for amateur boxing as a team is scheduled to leave for Venezuela on July 15.
Ninvalle thanked Digicel and, in particular, CEO Gregory Dean and Gavin Hope, Maurice Gajadar, Nexus Machinery, RRT and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport for making participation at the Games a reality.
