Alberttown man remanded on cocaine, hashish find in Berbice

THIRTY-four-year old Ivan Douglas called ‘Rasta’, who was behind the wheel of motor vehicle PJJ 9393, when the police stopped and searched him, was yesterday charged with two counts of trafficking in narcotics, after appearing before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, at the Whim Magistrate’s Court, Corentyne. The defendant, of Alberttown, Georgetown, was refused bail and remanded to prison until June 30, when he is expected to appear at the Springlands Court.
Police, in a release, had stated that, at about 08:50 hrs on Saturday, last, ranks had stopped and searched the vehicle in which two kilograms of cocaine and eighty-nine grams of hashish were found.
The vehicle, in which there was a male and a female, was en route to Suriname, at Molsen Creek, Corentyne.
The vehicle has been detained.
Sources said the illegal drug was removed from the vehicle’s ‘mud guard’.
Meanwhile, addressing the  issue of bail, Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, objected to pre trial liberty, and said he was  relying on the statute governing the Narcotics  Act, which allows bail on the grounds that special reasons with regards to the offence, are advanced.
