AFC seems to have run out of ideas

FOR an opposition political party, the Alliance For Change (AFC) fails to be constructive or useful and it seems that the party has run out of ideas or topics to raise in the public domain because it now seems to be bellyaching at little things. One of the newspapers carried an article from the AFC about full latrines, school staff shortages which it says is plaguing Paramakatoi. The party failed to give a comparative view of what obtains in schools today. Anyone would know that while there are problems in some schools, much work has been done on schools across the country to ensure that our children have the right resources and facilities and are able to get a good education.
A lot has been done to improve the school system and across the country. Schools have been built, even in areas where there are not many people, but the schools were built to cater for future generations too. There are secondary schools in every region. Schools have been equipped with dormitory facilities so that children do not have to travel daily from far off areas. These are managed by the Ministry and students receive hot meals in some schools which also open an avenue for local farmers in the areas to supply produce to the kitchens.
Schools have been equipped with proper facilities and while much has been done there is still a far way to go but nothing happens overnight. Development is incremental and there are a million interests that have to be represented.
While government provides the facilities and resources, I believe that Guyanese can adopt a self-help policy which is sadly lacking in this whole country. We all expect that the government will spoon feed us, but there is only so much that they can do. We can help ourselves by helping to maintain these structures, if not for us then at least for our children.
Instead of criticising and nitpicking, the AFC can find constructive ways to assist the people, if they truly care.
