SPURNED reputed husband Sereshchand Ramesram was fined $20,000 with the alternative of two months imprisonment yesterday, for wounding his former common law wife, Shikira Mohammed.
He pleaded guilty to the offence before Magistrate Roby Benn in New Amsterdam Court. Police Corporal Orin Joseph, prosecuting, said after the two had lived together for a year, Mohammed, 37, moved out of the home.
But, on May 13, she was walking along the roadway at Burn Bushe Dam, East Canje, also in Berbice, when she met the defendant and a quarrel ensued between them, developing into a fight, with Ramesram taking a piece of wood and lashing the older woman on her right leg.
Explaining his actions, the 19-year-old admitted that he, angrily, struck the virtual complainant but said he was sorry for doing so.
He claimed, though, that they have reconciled but the magistrate informed him that, he having previously pleaded to the charge, the court, is by law, compelled to impose a sentence.
