A COUPLE, whose common law relationship soured after 14 years, appeared before Magistrate Roby Benn in the New Amsterdam Court, Berbice, yesterday, on separate assault charges.
Khemraj Girdharry, a 35-year-old carpenter, was ordered to post $50,000 bail on the charge of assaulting Elizabeth Naidoo, and she was granted her pre-trial freedom on a $40,000 recognisance.
Police Corporal Orin Joseph, prosecuting, said, last May 24, Naidoo was in search of a Neighbourhood police rank, in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam when her estranged partner, armed with a cutlass, chased her into a neighbour’s yard.
But, on coming out of hiding, the woman was dealt several lashes about her body before her sister gave her a piece of wood, with which she struck Girdhary on his hip, the prosecutor said.
The cases have been put off for trial until August 20.
