Mining dredges general manager remanded on fraud charge

WILLIAM Johnson, of Lot 36 Post Office Street, Queenstown, Essequibo Coast, was remanded to prison yesterday, on a charge of fraudulent conversion.
Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton denied him bail after the prosecutor, Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunte objected to the grant on the ground that the accused may not report for trial.
The indictable charge said, between May 30 and June 3, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Backdam, Mahdia, Potaro, being solely entrusted with $170, 500, by Dexter Garraway, to purchase foodstuff and fuel, he, fraudulently, converted the money into his own use and benefit.
The prosecutor said Johnson is the general manager of the land mining dredges owned by Garraway and successfully requested that the case be transferred to Mahdia Court, for July 20.
