AT a simple ceremony held recently, Guyanese Women in Development (GUYWID) made a timely donation of one pair of wicket-keeping pads and gloves to the Young Warriors Cricket Club (YWCC) of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice. In making the presentation, Mrs Sharada Persaud, president of the organisation, said she and her members were very impressed with the facilities, which they used to raise funds recently. She said she felt compelled to make a contribution back to the community. In response, Mr Anil Beharry spoke on behalf of the club and expressed special thanks to GUYWID. He said that he is pleased that the club’s role in the community is recognised by another charitable organisation.
However, he is disappointed that members of the said community are not supportive and are bent on abusing, vandalising and destroying the facilities. He said that the club has changed the lives of many young cricketers, keeping them away from drugs and crimes. Some even made the game their profession.
He cautioned responsible citizens of the community to support the club for it is the only one in the East Canje area that provides an opportunity for our young people. He used the Rose Hall Community Centre as a living example, explaining that no cricket has been played there since Berbice Expo 2010.
He said the area is infested with drugs and if it not taken in hand, then who will suffer? The same drug-users will become criminals and harm innocent members of the area. He called on other entities to assist as the club dreams of a top class facility in the future.
