-at Temporary Shelter
THE Guyana Relief Council (GRC) granted and extension of stay of up to two weeks at its Temporary Shelter for 20 persons affected by the Easter Monday fire at 48 Barrack Street, Kingston.

In a statement, the GRC noted that it will constantly review the situation of the affected persons and is willing to further extend their stay as long as it is financially viable to do so.
The Temporary Shelter is offered at no cost to the residents and accommodates some 100 persons at any one time.
The statement said, the service was offered to all affected, but only 20 persons, including babies and children, accepted the offer.
“During their stay at the Shelter the GRC provides residents with three meals including porridge and other essentials for the babies. The council also assisted in outfitting the school age children with school uniforms to ensure their return to school,” the release said.
It added that basic amenities will also be provided to those affected to aid in the rehabilitation of their lives and finding alternative permanent accommodation.
“The Ramascindo family of seven persons is expected to leave the shelter for a rented apartment on May 26 and GRC will assist them as much as possible with material necessities to aid the transition from the shelter,” the release said.
The statement expressed GRC’s gratitude to International Pharmaceutical Agency (IPA) and Banks DIH for their donation of food supplies towards the provision of meals for the affected persons.
The council is also appealing to the general public and business community for donations in the form of food items, toiletries, janitorial supplies and monetary donations to facilitate the provision of further relief to those in need.
Those requiring information can contact the council on telephone number 225-3081 or visit GRC’s officer at Lot X West of Public Road, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
The GRC is a non-governmental and non-profit entity with a mandate to provide material aid to persons who suffer natural and manmade disasters throughout Guyana. For the year the council has assisted 177 persons who have suffered as a result of disasters.
