Works are moving apace at Leonora, West Coast Demerara, on the new Leonora Secondary School. Once all goes well students are expected to move into the new secondary school for the 2011/2012 academic year.Currently, students are housed at the old school in the Leonora Hindu Mandirt. In the 2011 Budget a total of 2.8B has been allocated for the continued maintenance, rehabilitation, extension and construction of educational facilities countrywide.
Additionally, some $1.6B has been budgeted this year for technical vocational education, which includes the completion of construction works at the Leonora Technical Institute, as well as the Mahaicony Technical Institute in Region Five (Mahaica/ Berbice).
The construction of the new Technical and Vocational Centres follow a revision of the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) curriculum to make it more relevant to the world of work.
Subsequently monies were made available through a $US9.6M Canadian Development Bank (CDB) funded project to facilitate the construction of the new centres. (Cullen Bess-Nelson photo)
