Murder accused Jean Lacruz found guilty of manslaughter

Jailed for eight years
MURDER accused Jean La Cruz, 36,  who confessed  to the murder of  her reputed husband Samkarran Singh on May 18, 2006, was yesterday found not guilty of murder by the jury, but guilty of manslaughter.
Presiding judge, Miss Dawn Gregory, imposed a penalty of eight years imprisonment.
In a confession statement which the police had presented, the accused had  confessed that  she was at the home of her reputed husband and was  drinking  a half bottle of white rum with him when he decided  not to buy any more liquor and to go and have  fun with another woman named “Nancy”.
The accused declared that she got ‘so vex’  that she stabbed her lover twice.
However, the woman denied making the statement, alleging that she was somewhere else at the time.  Her counsel Mr. Peter Hugh led an alibi in defence,  but the judge, after the  voir dire, ruled that the statement was freely and voluntarily made to the police.
The accused,  a domestic worker of mixed race, took the sentence calmly.
