Newell arrives today for FIBA Level 1 coaching clinic

OVER 50 coaches from around Guyana will converge on the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown from tomorrow, when the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) hosts the FIBA Level 1 coaching clinic, with former NBA assistant coach Tom Newell as the facilitator.
Newell served as the assistant coach of the Seattle Supersonics (now known as the Oklahoma City Thunders), New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks.

He first started as an NBA scout for the Golden State Warriors before joining the Seattle bench as the assistant coach from 1984 to 1990, having a brief stint as the head coach of the Supersonics in 1989.
According to Newell’s profile at the Douglas Sports Institute, he has also represented FIBA as one of its Expert Instructors in its Olympic Development Progamme.
The American will arrive in Guyana today and is expected to host a practice session with players from Georgetown, Linden and Berbice at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 15:00hrs, according to a release from the GABF.
Tomorrow, the clinic which will give its successful participants a Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) Level 1 coaching certificate.
The clinic will run daily from 17:30hrs to 21:00hrs until May 30 and the GABF is optimistic that the event will be a success.
