First Test at Providence Stadium
‘Under fire’ Sammy, Rampaul bowl Windies to victory
…first win in more than two years
INSPIRED fast bowling from ‘under fire’ skipper Darren Sammy (5-29) and Ravi Rampaul (4-48) guided the West Indies to a comfortable 40- run victory over Pakistan just after lunch on the fourth day of the first Digicel Test match at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, yesterday.
Scores in the match: West Indies 226 and 152, Pakistan 160 and 178.
Yesterday’s victory ended a dreadful run of form for West Indies, who had not won in 17 Tests dating back to February 2009.
Resuming on their overnight score of 80 for 3, with skipper Misbah Ul-Haq on 34 and Asad Shafiq 40, Pakistan lost the wicket of Shafiq who was bowled by Rampaul in the third over of the day’s play, as the bowler got a ball to cut back from outside the off stump and uproot the batsman’s middle stump.
More importantly for Pakistan, Shafiq who made 42 from 110 balls with six fours while batting for 148 minutes added 81 valuable runs for the fourth wicket from 36.2 overs with Ul-Haq who was on 35.
Umar Akmal joined Ul-Haq and smashed Bishoo through point for four, while Ul-Haq struck Devendra Bishoo into the player’s pavilion for a six before the bowler delivered the first no ball of the Pakistani’s second innings, to raise the 100 from 45.4 overs.
Ul-Haq took a liking to Bishoo after several defensive prods forward, by hitting the debutant leg spinner wide of mid on boundary for his sixth four as he posted his 11th half century in his 23rd Test match from 141 balls and 187 minutes batting.
Ul-Haq and Akmal posted 50 runs for the fifth wicket from 55 minutes batting and a combined total of 148 balls, as Pakistan progressed to 133 for 4, with Ul-Haq on 51 and Akmal who struck Roach past mid off for four, on 33.
Sammy replaced Roach at the Media Centre End and had a double strike in his third over of the day, removing Ul-Haq for 52 (160 balls, 219 minutes, 6×4, 1×6) and Mohammad Salman (00), leaving Pakistan on 135 for 6 midway through the morning session.
Abdur Rehman replaced Salman and opened his account with a four through point off Bishoo and at lunch, Pakistan who started the day needing 139 more runs to win, were 153 for 6 with Akmal on 39 and Rehman 05.
West Indies removed Rehman after lunch, when the batsman pushed forward to a ball from Rampaul that pitched and left him, taking a thick outside edge on its way to Devon Smith at slip, where the Grenadian made no mistake low down to his right and was backed by umpire Ashoka Da Silva’s television replay decision.
He was followed by Umar Gul (01) who was lbw to Sammy and from the comfortable position of 135 for 4 when Ul-Haq was dismissed by Sammy, Pakistan found themselves staring down the barrel of defeat at 166 for 9 when Akmal was lbw to a rampaging Sammy.
It was all over for the Pakistanis, when at 13:28hrs, Sammy who was later declared the man of the match scattered the stumps of Saeed Ajmal (03), leaving Wahab Riaz unbeaten on 11, to spark off wild celebrations on the field as the West Indies won a test against a top rated team for the first time, since they defeated England two years ago in Jamaica.
Both sides move onto St, Kitts for the second Test which is scheduled to get underway from Friday.
