Drugs defendant remanded after changing plea

JOAN Bynoe (no address given) was remanded to prison yesterday, when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on drugs charges.
The defendant had pleaded guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on May 6, she was in possession of 150 grammes cannabis (marijuana) and eight grammes cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
But she changed her plea to not guilty when the magistrate informed her that the penalty was three years imprisonment.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said, that day, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) was conducting a raid in Alexander Street, Bourda, Georgetown, where a search of Bynoe’s person yielded the prohibited substances in her shoulder bag.
The case has been postponed to May 13.
