Police hunting men who slaughtered pregnant cow
POLICE are on the hunt for four men who are allegedly involved in the theft and slaughter of an eight- month pregnant cow, which they disembowelled, leaving its head, entrails and dead calf lying behind in a pool of blood. The incident happened at Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara early yesterday morning.
The shocking discovery was made yesterday by its owner, Narinedat Deodatt, a 28-year-old cattle farmer of Success, East Coast Demerara.
The distraught Deodat told the Guyana Chronicle that he would normally leave his cattle in the enclosed Chateau Margot Chimney compound during the nights and did the same on Sunday. He said when he turned up at the chimney compound yesterday morning to take his animals out to graze, he made the horrific discovery.
He contacted residents in the neighbourhood and learnt from them that, around 03:00 hrs. yesterday morning, three men on bicycles, and a fourth in a white motor car had slaughtered the heavily pregnant animal, and escaped with the meat (beef).
The three on pedal cycles, according to the residents, had done the slaughtering in the compound, then pushed the carcass (minus head, entrails and calf) over the fence. It was allegedly collected by the man waiting on the other side of the fence, and who was said to be driving the white car. Because it was fairly dark, the witnesses claimed they were unable to figure out the number on the licence plate of the vehicle.
The matter was reported to the police, who were also given further directions. Acting on information, they visited a home in the neighbourhood, but no one was found there when they arrived.
Meanwhile, Deodat – who said that persons have been staking out his animals for some time now- recalled that last year they stole five cows which he had never recovered.
And just recently – last Wednesday- they again visited the herd and took away the one which was killed on Sunday night. However, he said, the animal apparently got away from the people who stole it, and was found by Deodat, wandering on a dam the following day. But this time, it was not so lucky.
Lamenting the loss, Deodat recalled what an asset the animal was to him. “I used to get up to three gallons of milk from she in one day,” he said, adding that the last time it ‘dropped’, he got two calves. Deodat said he is still trying to figure just why would a person want to slaughter a pregnant animal when there were so many others (not pregnant) around. Police are continuing their investigations.
