IN response to Kaieteur News article captioned ‘Guyoil Runs Short on Fuel as Fare Row Continues’ , dated April 18, 2011, the state-owned Guyana Oil Company (Guyoil) has emphatically denied the existence of any fuel shortage. In a press release issued by Management, Guyoil took note of the fact that the aforementioned Kaieteur News article carried only the side of a few dealers.
“We wish to make it clear that GUYOIL has no fuel shortage as the article would like to misinform the public, we always try our best to supply fuel to all of our dealers and customers so as to avoid stockouts and to maintain adequate stocks at our Service Stations,” the release stated.
It was noted, however, that occasionally there are delays in supply due to shipping problems from the refineries.
As was rightly pointed out in the article, the Oil Company is selling gasoline sixty dollars ($60) per gallon cheaper than the competition, which causes great demand on supplies.
Highlighted also was the fact that some of Guyoil’s dealers have their own road tank wagons and are picking up fuel and peddling rather than selling through the pumps at their Service Stations, as per contract.
According to the release, a few months ago, these unscrupulous dealers had unilaterally increased the price at their pumps to which the company responded by disabling the pumps, now they have reverted to peddling rather than operating as Service Station dealers and selling fuel to the public at Guyoil’s recommended price.
Meanwhile, GUYOIL gave assurances that they will continue to monitor the situation in the interest of consumers.
