Rogers and the child were taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival while the child was treated and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a stable condition.
Roger’s wife, Juliet, told the Guyana Chronicle that he was on his way to Pomeroon when he was killed.
The 46-year-old woman added that she received the news of her husband’s death through a vendor, a friend of her husband’s, via the telephone.
The father of four had hired the car which was taking him to Parika, also on the East Bank Essequibo, from where he was, headed to Pomeroon to conduct business.
Rogers was the front seat passenger. The driver escaped with minor injuries and is in police custody.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses told the Guyana Chronicle that they heard the screeching of tyres and they saw the vehicle come to a standstill after colliding with the iron bridge.
