THE president, executive committee and entire membership of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) are elated on the selection of Christopher Barnwell to represent the West Indies in the Twenty20 International against Pakistan later this month. Barnwell, who has learnt all his cricket at the DCC, is yet another great product of the club to represent the West Indies, following in the footsteps of Clive Lloyd, Lance Gibbs, the late Roy Fredericks, Roger Harper and in more recent times, Keith Semple and Travis Dowlin.
A pugnacious hitter of the ball who has batted in many positions for his country, Barnwell is also a competent medium fast bowler who can open the bowling.
Apart from representing Guyana at regional tournaments, including the Caribbean T20, he has gained invaluable experience playing in the T20 Champions League World Championship.
Recently re-elected president, Alfred Mentore, welcomed the news of Barnwell’s selection and said that while the cricketer deserves and earns this opportunity, his selection to the West Indies fold would surely serve to motivate and energise the other talented and dedicated young cricketers not only at DCC, but also in Guyana as a whole.
According to Mentore, Barnwell’s selection would be a fillip for and have a direct impact on the strategic plan that the new DCC executive committee has recently adopted.
Such a plan is focused on further developing and streamlining the operational and technical capabilities within the club, with a view to producing as many national and international cricketers as possible.
The president further added that a mere plan is not the panacea for developing young cricketers in the club, but must be actionable and centred on holistically addressing the modern needs, requirements and challenges of the players.
Achieving this goal, he said, is the task to which he and his executives have committed themselves in the short-, medium- and long-term.
In the meantime, Barnwell’s club mates, friends and well wishers continue to offer him congratulations and good wishes, while the Club is making plans to celebrate the young exciting West Indian selectee at an appropriate recognition function, prior to his departure for international duties.
