THE search for one missing fisherman has ended but that for another was still continuing up to press time.
The partly decomposed body of Rohan Dianand, 37, of Lot 73 Latchmansingh Street, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, was found last Friday night in Suriname and the authorities in the neighbouring country said a post mortem examination revealed that he died of asphyxiation due to drowning.
The corpse, with face and hands swollen, was recovered from an area called ‘Squatter’ Waknaam by Surinamese and relatives, who travelled from Guyana to join in the quest and said the deceased will be cremated in Suriname on Thursday.
The Guyana Chronicle was also informed that the six fellow crew members of Dianand, who had been detained since he disappeared, were released after the autopsy.
They had reported that he fell overboard while they were asleep on the fishing vessel anchored at a Suriname wharf and his mother, Indranie Dianand, 54, had been in the family group who went to aid the search for him.
The unmarried man alias ‘Bo Bo’ had left his home some three weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Guyana Police are searching for Hemchandra Debi, 41, of Unity, Mahaica, also on East Coast Demerara, who was discovered missing from the boat on which he was crew member about 02:00 h on Friday, while it was in the Atlantic Ocean, off Unity foreshore.
The report was made by two others who said Debi was steering and they were in the cabin but, after the craft went out of control in the water, they checked for but did not locate him and were taken into police custody.
