In an effort to rid the roadways of stray animals and to make it a safer zone for traffic and citizens, the Ministry of Home Affairs’ stray catcher’s units continued with the exercise yesterday on the East Coast of Demerara. The stray catchers unit impounded 16 animals at the Vigilance Police Station, pound– 10 cows, 4 sheep and 2 goats.
The ministry is appealing to the owners to ensure that their animals are kept off the roadways, and is also advising the owners to visit the Vigilance Police Station pound to retrieve the animals.
Since the implementation of the Pounds Amendment Bill, enacted in April, 2010, several animals were caught and brought to the various pounds across the country.
The bill allows $ 5000 to be paid to a stray catcher or any person who assists in capturing stray animals.
The unit has been working in Diamond, East Bank Demerara, and on Thursday on the East Coast Demerara, where 22 animals were caught and impounded at Cove and John Police Station. (GINA)
