AS a friend of senior members of the University of Guyana (UG) community at the Turkeyen Campus, and a past student of the institution, I have been keenly observing that over the last month, there has been a series of prominent, critical issues with the University of Guyana(UG). Going on what I see in the press, these letter writers are ignorant of the procedures of that university.
In particular, Joey Jagan’s letter in the Kaieteur News of March 25, 2011, titled “Misir must tell us about the situation here”.
These letters from Joey Jagan concerning Dr. Prem Misir and his role in the affairs of the University of Guyana are sadly, more of a personal nature than they are issue-related, showing that he has no civility or cordiality in respecting the fundamental journalistic principle of discussing relevant issues intelligently without degenerating to personal attacks on the individual.
It seems that Joey Jagan is now the public relations (PR) person for UG Registrar, Vincent Alexander, whom the evidence will show is doing a very poor job at the university. This is both comical and unfortunate.
Vincent Alexander should stop whining about the size and type of office that he has and start focusing on more important issues at UG, like student welfare. It is after all, the students’ campus.
UG campus offices were all originally designed that way. And before Joey Jagan publishes his thoughts about UG for all of Guyana to read, he must first acquire some understanding of the state of affairs at that university, and not ride solely on the complaints of a disgruntled registrar.
Neither the chancellor nor the pro-chancellor is responsible for running UG on a day to day basis. It is the vice-chancellor who is responsible for this. Truly, it is unfortunate that Vincent Alexander, the Registrar of the University of Guyana, lacks the decency and intelligence to follow the proper protocol in airing the concerns he obviously has about his office on the campus.
Nonetheless, since he is clearly unaware of his responsibilities after working in that capacity for so many years, I will happily enlighten him, and Joey Jagan, all for the sake of Vincent Alexander’s comfort.
And since Joey Jagan is ready and willing to mediate on Alexander’s behalf, he should explain to him, that notwithstanding the fact that the offices that are physically on that campus are generally of the same size, his discomfort with his office should be related directly to his immediate supervisor, who is the vice-chancellor, and not compare his office to another senior member’s, as it is not positioned on the campus.
