THE Regional Administration of Region 8 (Potaro/Siparuni) will be extending secondary educational facilities this year to cater for an increasing number of students who will be taking subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

Regional Executive Officer (REO) Mr. Ishwar Dass said the secondary schools at Mahdia and Paramakatoi will be extended to accommodate more classrooms; that a new Teachers’ Quarters will be built at Mahdia, as well as a larger dormitory for students from far-flung areas.

“At Mahdia, the sanitary block currently within the Mahdia Secondary School will be dismantled and rebuilt outside and the freed space will be used to build a classroom in response to the growing demand for secondary education within the Region. We are expecting more students
to come in September,” he said.

These works are being done under the capital works programme for the Region, this year, and for which a total of $129.3M has been allocated.

Other developmental works include the rehabilitation of the District Hospitals at Mahdia and Kato, resurfacing of the roads within Mahdia itself, and extending the bitumen surfaces to other streets which are not so currently surfaced.

The Regional Administration will also acquire two ATVs and a 4×4 vehicle to enable health care personnel to move more freely within the various communities, as well as two fogging machines and the relevant chemicals to spray areas where malaria vectors are prevalent.
