– mobile pumps mobilized in all affected areas
The Cane Grove drainage pump station is now fully operational and is draining the Cane Grove area of the water accumulated due to excessive rains.
The pump station experienced some electrical difficulties yesterday afternoon, but was up and running before long, in a matter of approximately 30 minutes. Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud and a technical team yesterday visited the pump station and pointed out that an additional seven pumps service the areas.
He added that across the country, mobile pumps are being deployed daily to different areas to bring some level of flood relief to affected citizens, expressly farmers, whose rice and cash crops are under threat.
The Agriculture Minister visited Helena Number Two, at Mahaica, on the East Coast of Demerara, where one of the mobile pumps was set up yesterday to drain the lands in the surrounding areas.
The mobile pump aided drainage by the Helena Number 2 sluice, which carried the water off into the Mahaica River.
Residents in the area complained that their rice fields and cash crop gardens were under as much as two feet of water, and registered their dissatisfaction at what they called a response that should have come three days ago.
However, the Agriculture Minister maintained that all efforts are being made to ensure that all those affected are supported.
He assured too that the Ministry is looking to put down permanent pumps in the area.
However, while these efforts are being made, the problem of fuel theft has been raised at several locations and the Agriculture Minister confirmed that several persons in charge of the mobile pumps operations, have been sacked for this malpractice.
The fuel for the mobile pumps is provided by the Agriculture Ministry and Persaud urged a sense of public spiritedness by all stakeholders in reporting such incidents to the relevant authorities.
The Agriculture Minister stated that across the country, interventions are being made to ensure that the impacts Guyanese face are minimized.
