GUYANA is maturing politically; growing economically and gaining international attention. The Bharat Jagdeo administration deserves a great deal of credit – thanks to the President. However, the country still has work to do to address issues such as the mass migration of skilled brains, the chaos of crime and mental attitude of the people—the minority political parties and their supporters.
Recently, the People’s National Congress has selected Mr. David Granger, a 65-year-old former military officer. This does not speak well for the future of the party and Guyana. First, public opinion indicates that people are not excited about his selection; second, his close alignment with the current party’s leaders, who are all Burhamites; third, based on local interviews, he lacks the local and international gravitas, and finally, his selection represents a political environment of the past.
The People’s Progressive Party(PPP) has not selected its candidate, but the Guyanese people should watch with much curiosity and hope that the selection would be someone who would be able to continue the achievements of the current President, Bharat Jagdeo.
The developments of physical, social and intellectual infrastructures are among the many. While much more could have been achieved, it was difficult dealing with the opposition PNC party, politically and intellectually, with street demonstrations, gunning down of government officials and more.
While the PNC officials may argue that their team is about the future, a team that comprises Robert Corbin, David Granger, and Carl Greenidge; can Guyana trust that new Robert Corbin, that new David Granger, that new Carl Greenidge, that new PNC? That is a legitimate question.
The PPP still gives the Guyanese people much to hope about: the records are there, and the expectations are encouraging, and for now Guyana is better under the stewardship of the PPP.
Guyana is better under stewardship of PPP/C
