Police bail objection overruled in $855,000 larceny case

ACTING Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday overruled police objection and granted bail, in the sum of  $250,000 to Royston George, 27, of Lot 25 First Street, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, on a simple larceny charge.
Particulars of the charge said on March 4, he stole a laptop bag containing articles to the total value of $855,000, property of Reaz Khan, but he pleaded not guilty.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, had objected to pre-trial freedom for the defendant, citing the prevalence of the crime.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant had parked his car in the Pegasus Hotel parking lot and, upon his return, discovered the front door ajar and police found the defendant’s image on a camera that was in the vehicle.
The magistrate held that the prosecution should have produced the photographic evidence, as contended by defence counsel Mark Waldron.
The case was postponed to March 11.
