Rice harvesting underway on Essequibo Coast

RICE farmers on Essequibo Coast are taking advantage of current hot weather conditions to harvest paddy from their fields. They are reaping in Perseverance, Suddie, Aurora, Riverstown, Annandale and Capoey in the South and Hampton Court and Eliza in the North.
Reports said 300 acres, of the 32,500 cultivated, have already been harvested and, with the average yield of 34 bags per acre, production is expected to surpass the set target of one million bags.
Meanwhile, the Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Department in Region Two (Pomertoon/Supenaam) is preparing access dams to facilitate transport of the grains to factories.
