MAGISTRATE Adela Nagamootoo yesterday suspended the driver’s licence of Suesharpaul Bishun for one year when he faced a second charge of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.
Appearing at the New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, Bishun pleaded guilty to having 141 microgrammes of alcohol in his system when tested by traffic ranks on January 25.
At the wheel of PJJ7308, Bishun was stopped in Pitt Street, shortly after midnight and taken to Central Police Station, also in New Amsterdam, where it was established that he had consumed above the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.
Asked by the Court, Police prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter, said he was unaware that the defendant is not a first time offender, but the magistrate perused the licence and observed that Bishun had previously committed a breach of the law.
Following the discovery, Magistrate Nagamootoo also imposed a $20,000 fine on Bishun, with the alternative of 12 weeks imprisonment.
