GCF, DDL partner again for Republic anniv. one-day tourney

HAVING successfully hosted their Rapid Chess tournament late last year under the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) TOPCO Juices brand, the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) has partnered with the said sponsor to organise a one-day Republic Anniversary tournament this Saturday at the Kei-shar’s Sports Club on Hadfield Street.
DDL/TOPCO’s Brand Executive, Alexis Crawford, last Monday presented the cheque for the sponsorship to the GCF and once again pledged her company’s support for five tournaments this year.
“TOPCO is proud to contribute to chess as it is not only a fun pastime activity, but it also helps one in becoming self-motivated and increases imagination and creativity,”  stated Crawford at the presentation ceremony.
Treasurer of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall, thanked the company for its commitment and support to chess, adding that although the tournament is open to all chess players, the GCF would like to see more junior players participate.
The Swiss System tournament consists of seven rounds with a time limit of 40 minutes per game. Registration starts at 10:00 h, with the first pawn scheduled to be pushed one hour later.
The tournament which has trophies and cash prizes at stake is open to all chess players in both the senior and junior categories, with an entrance fee of $800 for senior non-members and $600 for junior non-members, while members of the GCF will pay $300 for seniors and $200 for juniors.
Interested players can contact Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650 or Nandalall on 225-8270 during office hours for further details.
