Deal with contributors to East Coast traffic jams

IT is becoming more difficult to traverse the roadway between Success to Better Hope on the East Coast of Demerara due to heavy traffic buildups. The buildup is partially due to an increasing number of vehicles on the road. The result of this is that many 8:00 hrs workers usually reach late for their jobs, and even later when they have to get out of a traffic jam at 10 to 15 mph to reach 7 stop lights before reaching Lamaha Streets. Along this route, there are two schools, Apex Education and a school at Better Hope.  There are also four pedestrian crossings between Atlantic Garden and Better Hope. The thing that boggles the mind is that every morning there is a traffic police rank who is usually in front of Apex Education and yet the traffic moves at snail’s pace, causing a build-up that sometimes reaches Pigeon Island. It is noticeable that the officer in charge, who does a wonderful job of crossing the children, needs to adopt a more effective approach.
I suggest that Apex, since they have two campuses obliquely opposite, should set some timing when students can cross the road in large batches. If school will be in session from 8:30 hrs and Apex expects students arriving at 7:00 hrs then they should instruct them that every 20 minutes from 7:00 hrs there will be a crossing that will be indicated be the police.
Apex should also provide a waiting area in the campuses where the police can be seen so that a timely indication can be given. Currently, vehicles have to stop for 3 students to pass, sometimes 5 students and then 6 students and an adult, etc, and it goes on. On top of this, many vehicles usually turn out from the railway embankment into the main road at the Vryheid’s Lust connection, which also contributes to the traffic jam.

Many motorists are hesitant to use the railway embankment because of the rough surface and bridges that are not properly maintained. If one should visit the Coldingen area there is a turnoff point for all vehicles coming from lower East Coast/Berbice due to a bridge in progress at Friendship/ Buxton, where there is also a buildup right along the railway embankment; and even at Buxton there are heaps of sand that encroaches on almost an entire lane of the road.
The contractor(s) can at least deposit this properly to prevent vehicles creating a double lane on one side and damaging the parapet and edges of the road at that point.

I am urging the road authorities to provide some relief, by discussing this with Apex Education, at least the contractor(s) who is/are building roads at Buxton; and to also provide some remedial works on the bridges and potholes on the railway embankment; also the main road on places such as when entering Cove and John, at Enmore, at Strathspey public road, Ann’s Grove, from Coldingen turn to the turn before the service station, etc.
